Maui County lifted disaster restrictions for Business Zone 5A behind the Lahaina Cannery Mall on Wednesday.

The reopened zone stretches from Mala Ocean Tavern and Honu Seafood to the Old Lahaina Luau area. It can be accessed via the Lahaina Cannery Mall only. Residents and business owners should heed any safety barriers and government personnel within reopened zones, the county said.

Entry into the Lahaina wildfire disaster area remains prohibited unless authorized by law, due to health and safety risks and to protect against criminal property damage, the county said.

A total of 17 primary zones and 83 sub-zones have been established for the 2,170 acres in the 5-mile are impacted by the recent wildfire. Maui County is systematically lifting restrictions and reopening zones as the areas are cleared of hazardous materials by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Some areas, like the Lahaina Gateway Center, are now open to the public; others remain restricted to local access only, such as Kaniau Road Zone 1C, which the county reopened Monday and Tuesday to allow the first group of residents to reenter their properties using vehicle passes.

Maui Emergency Management Agency Interim Administrator Darryl Oliveira said Monday that the county expects to announce more zone openings this week, with reentry to continue next week.
