The second born into a family of five brothers, he grew up in Williamsville, New York and went to Williamsville North High School for three years, before moving to a suburb of Pittsburgh, and attending Woodland Hills High School located in Churchill, where he played football and basketball, received several honors for his performances.
He enrolled at the University of Arizona and played football for the Wildcats team until 2009, scoring 16 touchdowns in 22 games.
Thanks to his successful college career, Rob earned positive critiques, and despite an injury and surgery in 2009, was chosen in the second round of the NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.
In his rookie season, Rob played in all 16 games, 11 of which were starts, and scored 10 touchdowns from 546 receiving yards. He won attention from people of the NFL Madden video game, which honored him by inventing a “Rob Gronkowski Award”, given to players scoring three or more touchdowns in a single game, as he did against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He continued to play extremely well in 2011 and 2012, scoring 17 and 11 receiving touchdowns respectively, with a career-high of 1,327 receiving yards in 2011. Thanks to his performances, the popular Gronk was named into the First-team All-Pro in both years, having been the NFL receiving touchdowns leader for the 2011 season.
